McMaster Divinity College Linguistics Circle – Monthly Meeting

Presenter: Yoshihiro Takahashi, Ph.D. Student at MDC

Title: The Grammar of Non-Name Vocative ἀδελφοί and Its Implication for Social Relations: the Corinthian Letters as a Test Case

We have our final Linguistics Circle meeting for the academic year on Thursday, March 30, 7-9pm. Our presenter is Yoshihiro Takahashi, PhD student in New Testament. His paper is entitled “The Grammar of Non-Name Vocative ἀδελφοί and Its Implication for Social Relations: the Corinthian Letters as a Test Case.” In this paper, he applies the theory of SFL linguist Cate Poynton to the analysis of Paul’s relationship with the Corinthian Christians. In both 1 and 2 Corinthians, the nature of Paul’s relations with the congregation is debated. By utilizing Poynton’s theory of tenor, this paper offers a clearer picture of Paul’s relations with the Corinthians.
