McMaster Divinity College Linguistics Circle – Monthly Meeting
Presenter: Aaron Jung, PhD student in New Testament at MDC
Title: “Language Development and Intention”
Our next Linguistics Circle gathering is this Thursday, October 26, (7–9pm) in the boardroom at MDC. Our presenter is Aaron Jung (PhD student in New Testament), whose paper is entitled “Language Development and Intention.” The paper summary is:
“My paper is an exploratory descriptive study that reevaluates Halliday’s early understanding of his functional linguistics theory rooted in sociological perspective and his observations of infant language development. It aims to shed light on the language development process through which a speaker’s intrapersonal intention, expressed through language, becomes integrated into the interpersonal language use process, spanning from early infancy to the transitional stage, with the assistance of developmental psychology perspectives.”
Anyone who is interested in joining is most welcome to join this and future meetings. As usual, there is a pre-Circle dinner gathering at 5pm. We will meet in Cullen Hall near the back doors (that face the centre of campus) and walk together to the selected restaurant. It is always a good time to socialize outside of the classroom before diving deep into the paper discussion.
