McMaster Divinity College Linguistics Circle – Monthly Meeting

Presenter: Moisés Zumaeta, PhD Candidate in New Testament at MDC

Title: “Paul and the Cretan Saying in Titus 1:12: A Racist Slur or a Rebuke against Prejudice?”

We are pleased to announce our first Linguistics Circle of 2023-24 next week, September 14 (7-9pm), in the boardroom at MDC. Our presenter is Moisés Zumaeta, PhD candidate in New Testament. His paper entitled “Paul and the Cretan Saying in Titus 1:12: A Racist Slur or a Rebuke against Prejudice?” Using the pragmatics of Geoffrey Leech, he argues that a so-called literal or plain reading of this verse is unwarranted, and that Paul is actually rebuking racial discrimination.

Anyone who is interested in biblical studies, linguistics, Titus, Cretans, or anyone who is simply interested is most welcome to join this and future meetings. For any questions, please contact Dr. Dave Yoon (yoond2@mcmaster.ca) or Dr. Stanley Porter.

As usual, there is a pre-Circle dinner gathering at 5pm. We will meet in Cullen Hall near the back doors (that face the centre of campus) and walk together to the selected restaurant. It is usually a good time to socialize outside of the classroom before diving deep into the selected topic.
